YOGA FOR EVERY BODY
What distinguishes Iyengar yoga is the very high degree of attention paid to ALIGNMENT. Sometimes PROPS may be used to increase awareness and to make the poses accessible. Sometimes, we hold the poses longer than students might be used to in a flow-style class. There is an emphasis on movement, but then learning how to CALMLY ABIDE in the body.
Why Do We Focus So Much On Standing Poses in Iyengar Yoga?
By BIY Yoga, March, 2016
When students first start Iyengar Yoga, it is typical for the teacher to introduce the standing poses first (of which there are eighteen). The standing poses are strong, dynamic asanas that can be different to perform initially. When taught and performed correctly, standing poses educate the legs, teaching them how to straighten and support the body weight correctly.
